Are you ready to pony up?
This is where throttle meets tide. From Bali’s surf culture in Canggu to Lombok’s untouched reefs, you’ll carve a route across Indonesia’s most iconic islands. Expect early rides, salt-stung sessions, and the rhythm of the road. Whether you’re a surfer chasing barrels or a rider chasing horizons, these side quests offer a hectic May holiday.
Request to JoinSurf Coaching + Photography
The moto-surf stoke combo is the focal point of the trip, obviously.
To maximize the chances of excellent surfing every day as well up-skilling throughout the week, you will have a dedicated surf coach along for the ride. They will help determine which break to choose based on local insights, forecasts and group preferences up to 4 days in advance.
In some instances, video analysis will be provided, eg. at the beginning and end of the week to mark the progression. Other photographers and videographers will meet us in different locations to document us on the bikes and in the water. We will edit this and other footage into a short film to share after the trip.
The Route
Bali: Start your journey in Canggu, tuning your bike and surf legs on Batu Bolong’s mellow walls or Echo Beach’s faster reef. Ride south to Uluwatu and Padang Padang for world-class waves, then escape west to Medewi, Bali’s longest left.
Head East to the ferry and base yourself in Kuta Lombok for a couple days. Ride to Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan, Gerupuk, Ekas Bay, and Mawi — each a chapter of progression and stimulation of the body and mind. The more advanced of the intermediates can test themselves at Desert Point when the swell calls.
The Motorcycles
In partnership with a decade old Bali custom motorcycle maker, Malamadre, we will be riding custom made, island and surf appropriate bikes that look and feel a little bit nicer than your average moped. Transporting you along beaches, through jungles, narrow cut throughs and up mountains, your bike will be your home (aside from the hotels).
The Accommodation
We will stay in handpicked surf lodges and boutique villas — each with a pool and local charm and often right on the water. From Canggu’s vibrant surf hubs to quiet Kuta Lombok, every stop blends rest, comfort, and connection.
In some instances, room sharing will occur and you can decide who to bunk up with or we can all draw straws. If you pick the private room option in checkout, this will be provided.
Is This Side Quest For You?
⚡ Let's be honest, this isn't for the lazy, un-athletic, or coy. We will be covering a lot of ground and surfing at least once every day, and then adding a little something after that.
Limited Spaces AvailableThe Bikes
Malamadre Custom Motorcycles will provide the bikes and mechanical assistance. Founded by Dirk in 2015, they have facilities in Canggu, Uluwatu and Lombok.

The Bali Side Quest Rough Itinerary (Group 2 Núria)
After exploring Uluwatu, Canggu and Medewi, we will head for Lombok, as outlined below. This is a guiding light that will alter if conditions require it. We will pre-book some accommodation and then keep other nights and days open to serendipitous drifting.
Pre-ride Briefing and Dinner
The final evening before your side quest truly begins, all riders will be invited for an Opening Dinner and Briefing to meet everyone involved and confirm all last minute details, answer questions etc and set the tone for the days ahead. This will be your chance to ask stupid questions and get stupid answers! And if you haven't already had the chance, you can check on your bike stored around the corner just beforehand.
First Days in Canggu
Day 1: Arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) and head to Canggu, the trendy hub for surfers. Spend a day getting accustomed to the bike and the Balinese roads.
Beginners: Start at Batu Bolong, a long reef break with easy, slow-rolling waves, perfect for long-boarding and progression.
Intermediates/Advanced: Head to Echo Beach for more powerful reef breaks. The waves here are faster and more varied.
Day 3: West to Medewi
West coast escape to Medewi Take a trip to the west coast for a change of scenery and a unique wave. All levels: Medewi offers one of Bali's best and longest left-hand point breaks over a smooth pebble bottom. The wave is mellow and forgiving, making it perfect for longboards and intermediates looking to practice their turns.
Day 4: Challenge yourself on the Bukit Peninsula.
Ride south to the Bukit Peninsula for world-famous breaks.
Beginners: Find mellow, forgiving waves at Baby Padang (also known as Padang Padang Right) on a rising tide.
Advanced: Tackle the legendary, fast, and hollow left-hand barrel at Padang Padang (best on bigger swells) or the multiple powerful sections at Uluwatu.
Day 5: Boat Ride
Early morning surf in Ulu and then cross to Lombok. Ride to the port of Padang Bai and take a 2-hour fast boat (or slower ferry with bike) to Bangsal Harbor, Lombok.
The crossing offers views of the Gili Islands. From Bangsal, take a Grab ride to our Bike Shop.
Days 6–7: Settle into Kuta Lombok and explore nearby breaks
Head to Kuta Lombok, the main surf hub on the island's south coast.
Beginners: Enjoy the wide, sandy beach and gentle waves at Selong Belanak, widely considered the best spot for absolute beginners.
All levels: Visit Tanjung Aan, a stunningly beautiful bay offering a versatile A-frame reef break. On small days, it's great for beginners and longboarders; on bigger days, it becomes more powerful for intermediates.
Day 8: Explore Gerupuk Bay's variety
Ride east to Gerupuk, where a short boat ride will take you to multiple breaks. Beginners: Surf the forgiving, long right-hander at Inside Gerupuk. The wave breaks over a deep, smooth reef and is perfect for learning.
Intermediates/Advanced: Test your skills on the faster, hollower waves at Outside Gerupuk, which offers several different peaks.
Day 9: Ride to Ekas Bay
Continue east to Ekas Bay, a more remote and pristine destination. Beginners/Intermediates: Take a boat to the sheltered Inside Ekas break. This mellow A-frame is ideal for practicing on unbroken waves.
Intermediates/Advanced: For more of a challenge, head to Outside Ekas, a powerful right-hander with steeper sections.
Day 10: Visit Mawi and Areguling
Head west of Kuta for some of Lombok's most consistent and powerful breaks.
Intermediates/Advanced: Mawi is an exposed reef break with a solid left and a shorter right, consistently attracting swell.
Intermediates/Advanced: Nearby Areguling also has a variety of rights and lefts over a reef, with the right offering a long, powerful ride.
Day 11–12: Attempt the famous Desert Point
For advanced surfers, make the pilgrimage to the remote and fickle left-hand reef break, Desert Point (also known as Bangko-Bangko), on the southwestern tip of the island.
This wave is for experts only, breaking over a very shallow reef. It is a long, demanding ride by motorcycle, and it only works under specific swell conditions during the dry season.
For all others: Use this day to revisit a favorite spot or enjoy a scenic coastal ride.
Day 13: Journey back to Bali
Hard to say where we will precisely be at this stage but we should be heading back to base for the Closing Dinner and recap of the trip.
Or extend your rental, keep your bike and head East to Sumba...like a restless banshee, possessed by the seemingly limitless horizon ahead, drawn ever further East towards your own personal el dorado, you ride until the land ends to find an empty line up, the perfect wave... Perhaps for you at the very moment, your quest will only have just begun!
