Also known as Pucak Mangu, Mount Catur is located in Bali’s central highlands. Located at the summit of Gunung Catur at 2,096 meters above sea level, at the top you will find a Hindu Temple, surrounded by monkeys and on a clear day you can see all of Lake Bratan and Bedugul spread out before you. The walk takes you through the lush greenery of the tropical rainforest, enjoying the panoramic views, aromas, sounds, and peaceful atmosphere of the jungle, as well as fresh air. Some parts of the trail paved and the entire route is well-maintained, so the adventure is suitable for beginners. At the summit Pura Pucak Mangu is one of the nine directional temples in Bali, protecting the Northwest of Bali from evil spirits, and also one of the four sacred temples (Catur Loka Pala temples) that are protecting the four main cardinal directions, representing the North. Based on the little information you can find about the temple, it is believed to be dedicated to Dewa Sanskara (God Sanskara) – the god of vegetation, and holy lakes surrounding the temple (Batur, Buyan and Tamblingan lakes). The temple is still a must-visit destination for Balinese Hindus and a site for some religious festivals to worship Sanskara: Purnama Sasih Kapat (around October) and Purnama Sasih Kapitu (around January) and on specific days in the Balinese calendar the path is shared with locals who make offerings along the route and at the temple. The trek starts up the mountain in a gentle incline that steadily increases as you get higher. Most of the mountain is covered in forest and due to the shade the walk can be started at a leisurely time. The 6km trek takes about 2 to 3 hours and there is a shelter and clearing at the top.

Arrive at the parking (Parkir Umum Pura Pucak Mangu on Google Maps) at a time of your choice, between 6am - 10am. Hike to the Pura Pucak Mangu at a pace of your choice. Enjoy the scenery while having a tea or coffee. Return to the start point down the same route
