The core philosophy behind Nyepi is to cleanse the island of negative energies and restore harmony between man, nature and the divine.

Arrival Day: March 17th

Gather with like minded yogis on your first night over a traditional Balinese dinner. We’ll have some local Balinese scholars and priests join us to explain more about the meaning of Nyepi and why we have gathered at such a special time in Bali. (When you book in full or with a deposit, you will be added to the immersion whatsapp to see who else will be on the trip.)

walkabout

March 18th: Get your bearings and start to unwind

Your first morning with us. Enjoy the daily breakfast as staff gently welcome you to the resort to get situated and comfortable for your stay.

On your first day we will start with yoga at sunrise. After breakfast we will head to Sebatu, a waterfall known for removing black magic, emotional burdens and spiritual blockages. The experience at Sebatu is not a traditional Melukat ceremony with queues of tourists waiting in line for a photo opportunity but a chance to connect with nature at a waterfall famed for its healing powers. A chance to give thanks for being in Bali and to ask for guidance on your trip. A grounding way to start the first day you will walk through waist deep water to give offerings and then let the holy water cleanse your mind and body for this purification ceremony. (If you are on your menstrual cycle you will not be able to partake in this activity and we can arrange for your final day instead.)

We will then head to the rice fields to enjoy a walk around the terraces before heading for a group lunch. The afternoon will have sharing circle for first day reflections.

gunung

The Ogoh-Ogoh Parade

Everyone will then be encouraged to head into central Ubud to witness the Ogoh Ogoh parade. An evening where gargantuan demonic effigies are paraded through the streets. The statues are accompanied by the sounds of the gamelan, listening to the percussion sounds you will watch traditional Balinese dancing.

The ogoh-ogoh parade is held on the night of the last day of the Balinese lunar calendar, also known as Pengerupukan. In Balinese Hinduism, this day is considered the time when the universe is in a state of chaos, and the spirits of demons and negative forces are believed to roam freely. To ward off these malevolent entities and restore order, the Balinese build ogoh-ogoh effigies, which represent these negative forces, and parade them around the island.

nyepi

March 19th: Nyepi Begins...

Nyepi starts at 6am, it is a time for self-reflection, meditation, and spiritual cleansing. Everyone will remain in the retreat compound, using minimal electricity, no lights, no music or television and remaining as quiet as possible.

Religious activities are placed on hold, telecommunication networks pause their data services and all manner of vehicles are strictly prohibited from being driven.

For 24 hours Bali’s public areas are transformed from bustling energy centers to still, empty spaces, completely devoid of human activity. Nyepi encourages us to go inward and question the integrity of our lives: are we truly living or simply existing? Do our actions serve a greater purpose? Are we able to overcome our impulses, or are we enslaved by the temptations of the sensory realm? The Catur Brata, or four pillars, of Nyepi invite every individual immersed in its silence to dive into these aspects of their being. They are, Amati Geni (no fire, light, and in modern contexts, electricity), Amati Karya (refraining from work or action), Amati Lelungan (no travelling) and Amati Lelanguan (non-indulgence or the avoidance of passion). In honour of these pillars, many Balinese will withdraw from earthly activities such as sex, cooking and eating during Nyepi, entering a space of inner contemplation.

Traditionally in Balinese culture fasting is also encouraged. Meals will be provided on this day but if you would like to partake in a one day waster fast this may help bring clarity and understanding. Theresa will invite a silent group meditation and if desired, we can provide sensory deprivation tools (eye covers and ear noise silencers) to truly look inward disconnected from external stimuli.

March 20th: Gunung Kawai and the Pyramids of Chi

After starting your day with a dynamic flow class, we’ll head to one of Bali’s most unique temples, Gunung Kawi, known as ‘The Valley of the Balinese Kings’ which was carved into the rocks in the 11th Century.

After lunch looking out over the rice terraces we’ll then head to Pyramids of Chi to immerse ourselves in positive vibrations at their unique LSV (light, sound, vibration, healing). Blending technology and tradition, this creates a powerful and accessible portal into expanded states of consciousness. A safe, substance-free experience designed to awaken healing, clarity, and manifestation.

Theresa

March 21st: Threads of Life & Yoga

The morning's yoga and breakfast is followed by a visit to Threads of Life for one of their creative workshops to learn about the cultural importance of Batik in Indonesia in one of their bespoke workshops. There will then be free time to explore Ubud, there are museums, shops or the monkey forest that can all be explored at your own pace. Then we will have a sunset yoga session to end the day.

Nyepi

March 22nd: Batur

We will leave Ubud at 2am to start the hike to summit of Mount Batur for Sunrise. Clouds allowing, you will be able to see all the way to Java. After we come back down, relax in the thermal spas, before returning fora relaxing yoga Nidra and leaving dinner.

We can arrange a Cacao with Kitan Chanting if requested by the group.

March 23rd: Yoga & Jewelry-making

On our final day we will have one last yoga session, we’ll create a keepsake of your trip at one of Bali’s jewelry making workshops.
